April 7 was declared International Health Day by the WHO, to raise awareness of various health issues. The year 2011 theme was Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR). This health day was celebrated for the first time this year at ACS Beirut from March 31 till April 8.
During that week, an awareness campaign was carried out at the school. Posters were displayed all over the campus, important facts and relevant information about AMR were highlighted in the HS daily bulletin and flyers and interesting facts about AMR were displayed on two bulletin boards at the entrances of the two main buildings (See images). The AMR issue was addressed in all HS biology classes and integrated with the genetics and immunology units. The week culminated with a presentation about the severity of Anti-Microbial Resistance worldwide.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Suha Kanj Sharara, a specialist in infectious diseases, addressed the causes and consequences of AMR and highlighted the global actions that should be taken to reduce the impact of this serious health issue. An article summarizing the different activities undertaken during that week was published in the June 2011 ACS matters (see attached)
